Editorial Photography

If a “picture is worth 1,000 words”, then a photo essay or picture story must be worth… how many thousands of words? Much like your favorite film or novel, a photo essay draws you in, immersing you with detail, emotion, even intrigue. Film and movies use motion and sound, lighting and scenery as storytelling tools. The novelist relies on descriptive narrative to set the scene and build the characters, plot, and drama. All of these stories have a beginning, middle, and end.

I do this with cameras, lenses and most importantly, years of experience. Your organization’s story will be told in similar fashion thru photography. The scene is set, often with wide-angle shots. Telephoto lenses are used for close-ups, allowing photo subjects to be themselves while I remain unobtrusive. Lighting, of course, is key to setting the mood. Decisive moments are captured that reveal the character of photo subjects.

Years of documentary shooting as an editorial photographer, on assignment for national consumer magazines, has honed my skills to see, capture, and edit images into successful visual stories. My best compliment comes from a story subject who says, “How did you get this photograph, I didn’t even notice you shooting”?

The Lowest Paid Teacher in america

people magazine

A National Education Association (NEA) survey determined that the lowest paid teacher taught in this 100 year old, one-room schoolhouse in the rural farming town of McLeod, ND. When I visited to capture the wonderful story of Janice Herbranson, she had 5 students, kindergarten thru 6th grade. Photo Essay was shot over two days in sub-zero January weather. Despite the extreme cold the entire "student body" went outside for flag raising and lowering ceremonies and for recess after lunch.

jodi's run for ovarian cancer

Ovarian Cancer benefit 5K Walk-Run held annually in Denver's City Park. A good photo story conveys the emotion of the day and engages the viewer, making them feel like they are actually at the event. I approach this process by using a variety of lenses - wide angle thru telephoto; different camera angles - low to the ground, eye level, overhead; scouting the race course ahead of time to find good "photo op" spots.

Perfect example of using "Storytelling Photography" to share the news of your event. The American Society of Civil Engineers commissioned me to document their annual Concrete Canoe Competition. Had to be sure each engineering school's team was photographed as well as the entire events of the day. The photographs were made available same day for media use and down the road for PR, Social Media, Marketing future year's event.

Los Angeles Firefighter -

Day In the life book for children

It took over three months of prep & planning just to schedule the shoot. The educational publisher wanted a "Day In The Life" photo essay for a children's book about a female firefighter. They added requirements that the fire house had to have the "old style" pole that allowed firefighters to get from the 2nd floor down to the rigs by sliding the pole, and there needed to be a pet Dalmatian dog at the station. Since it was for a children's book, no "gruesome" or overly tragic photographs permitted.
